Service Description
Interested in learning the classical secrets behind glowing, dimensional oil paintings? 🎨 What is Grisaille in Oil Painting? Grisaille (pronounced grih-ZAI) comes from the French word gris, meaning “grey.” The grisaille method—a traditional technique using monochrome underpainting—helps artists master light, form and structure before applying colour. Paired with transparent glazing, it reveals the rich depth and luminosity found in the works of the Old Masters. In this two-part workshop, you’ll begin by creating a complete grisaille underpainting using only black, white and grey tones. Once dry, we’ll guide you through the process of applying translucent colour glazes to bring your painting to life. Whether you're a beginner looking to strengthen your foundations or an experienced artist exploring classical layering techniques, this course offers a solid framework for confident, radiant oil painting. Taught by professional artist Dan Bethell, this workshop is perfect for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of tone, value and colour harmony.
