Drawing Foundations Course ✏️✏️✏️ We’re going back to basics with this 4-week drawing foundations course — a focused exploration of essential drawing techniques across a range of traditional media, including graphite, charcoal, ink, and pastels. Designed to build confidence and clarity, this course will ground you in the core principles of drawing while helping you develop a stronger understanding of how to create convincing, representational forms. You’ll be surprised how much strengthening your drawing skills can improve your painting, as you learn to clearly observe and convey the shapes of objects and the movement within forms. Who Is It For? This course is ideal for beginners and developing artists who want to strengthen their fundamental drawing skills. Whether you’re completely new to drawing or looking to refine your approach, you’ll gain practical tools and a deeper understanding of how to observe and translate what you see onto the page. What You’ll Learn: Throughout the course, we’ll focus on the key building blocks of drawing: ✏️ Mark-making and line quality 🌗 Understanding tonal value and contrast 👁️ Observational drawing skills 📐 Proportion and basic structure 🔍 Simplifying complex forms 🎨 Exploring different drawing materials 📄 Understanding surface and paper types (hot pressed, cold pressed, rough) and how they affect your marks By the end of the course, you’ll have a series of studies that demonstrate a clearer grasp of form, tone, and confident mark-making. Techniques We’ll Cover ✏️ Building form through line and tone 🌗 Shading techniques using graphite and charcoal 🖋️ Expressive and controlled mark-making with ink 🎨 Using pastels to explore tone and softness 🔍 Breaking subjects down into simple shapes ✏️ Developing depth and volume through tonal relationships Why Four Weeks? Drawing is the foundation of all visual art. Over four weeks, you’ll have the time to: Build confidence across multiple materials Strengthen your observational skills Develop a consistent and structured drawing approach What’s Included ✔️ All drawing materials provided* *Please bring your own sketchbook/notebook and apron.* 📍 Location: The Five Villages Hall, Station Rd, Backford, Chester, CH1 6NT 📅 When: Wednesday mornings, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm - Please note that occasional gaps in the schedule may occur when the hall is hired. ✨ Spaces are limited — early booking is advised.
